Exam Day — and What You Now Carry

(a) Where you are

Sixty lessons. Every required line of Pliny and Vergil read, parsed, translated, questioned, and connected; every question-type drilled to a protocol; two full exams survived tired. There is no new content in this lesson because there is no new content left — the syllabus is finite and you have finished it. What remains is logistics, retrieval, and the right frame for one Tuesday morning in May.

(b) The week before — maintenance, not acquisition

Section I (65 min, 52 Qs): discretes at ≤75 seconds each with triage (L48); banked time spent on sight short-sets; long sets fast on placement, careful on lemmas (L51's re-read rule). Answer every question — there is no penalty for wrong answers, so a blank is a donated point. Your letter-of-last-resort, chosen now, applied to anything unresolved at the five-minute warning. The break: stand, eat something, do NOT post-mortem Section I with other students. Their panic is contagious and their answers are no better than yours. Section II (115 min): Q1 fast and exact (15') — the L52 protocol; Q2 segmented and audited (15') — tense/voice/number only; Q3 by rows (25') — skeleton before prose; Q4–Q5 (30' each) — glosses first, Part A short sentences, Part B assembled from the template. The fatigue adjustments from L55: pronoun referents and verb voices get the final read-through; nothing else does. The blank-mind contingency: it happens, it passes. The script: re-read the glosses (they summarize the passage); find the verbs; the construction-families are finite and you know all of them. Sixty seconds of procedure dissolves what panic protects.

The exam is DIGITAL — three practical consequences: (1) you TYPE your responses, including Latin citations — practice typing Latin (no macrons needed) so quotation doesn't cost you time; (2) scansion is entered using the methods listed in the app's reference information — any listed method is accepted, so know YOUR method (marks above the line) and adapt calmly to the input format; (3) there are no proctor time-warnings: the on-screen clock turns red at five minutes remaining, and that's all the notice you get — your per-question time budget (section c) is therefore not a suggestion but your only timekeeper. Run your mocks (L56–59) with a silent visible timer to train exactly this.

(d) The retrieval kit — everything you memorized, on one page

(e) The frame — confidence from evidence, not affirmation

You do not need to feel confident; you need to know what is true. What is true: you have read 100% of the required Latin — most candidates have not. You have run the full exam twice under honest conditions and own a written diagnosis of your own error-patterns — almost no candidate has. Every question-type on that paper has a protocol you have executed repeatedly. The exam contains no surprises for you: it is sight passages (you have a procedure), required passages (you have read them more times than their authors revised them), and rubric-driven essays (you assemble; others improvise). The curve, finally, is your friend: the mean score on this exam is modest, and the preparation gap between you and the field is the widest this course could make it.

And one more true thing, for the walk in: the man whose letters you can now read at sight spent his last free evening before a catastrophe doing his reading — posco librum Titi Livi, et quasi per otium lego — and the poem you can now scan ends its hero's twelve-book labor in four words you can parse cold: Italiam non sponte sequor — duty, performed without guarantee of feeling. Do the reading. Sit the exam. Fortes fortuna iuvat.

(f) After — and what you actually built

Scores arrive in July. Whatever the number, file what is permanently yours: you can read Latin — real Latin, at sight, with a procedure; you know one perfect poem and one perfect correspondence from the inside; and you have watched two very different Romans face catastrophe, empire, love, and grief with their grammar as the instrument of their honesty. The exam was the occasion. The capability is the point. If this course did its work, some line from it — longior causis timoris timor erat, or tantae molis, or the quiescenti similior of a man found like a sleeper on a beach — will surface, unbidden, years from now, exactly when you need it. That's what memoria meant to both your authors: not storage — survival.

The last strategy note: when the proctor says begin, take one breath and write nothing for ten seconds. You have been here sixty times. Then open the booklet and do what you have always done — verbs first.
