Why do we do anything? Four theories of motivation

Motivation is the set of forces that energize and direct behavior toward goals. Each classic theory answers a different question:

Drive-reduction is a push from inside; incentive is a pull from outside. Drive-reduction's blind spot is that people often raise their arousal on purpose — hence arousal theory. How much arousal is best? The Yerkes-Dodson law: performance peaks at moderate arousal, following an inverted U — and the peak shifts with task difficulty. Maslow's hierarchy of needs

Abraham Maslow arranged needs in a pyramid: physiological (food, water, sleep) → safety (shelter, security) → love/belongingesteem (achievement, respect) → self-actualization (fulfilling one's potential). His claim: lower needs generally must be met before higher needs motivate us. A person searching for food and a safe place to sleep is not organizing her day around recognition or self-improvement. The CLEP exam tests the order and the priority principle.

Hunger: biology sets the floor, culture decorates the room

The hypothalamus is the brain's hunger-control center, monitoring blood chemistry and hormones. Leptin, secreted by fat cells, signals "energy stores are adequate" and suppresses hunger. The body also defends a set point — a weight it maintains by adjusting hunger and metabolism, which is part of why sustained dieting is hard (eat less and metabolism slows).

But eating is not only biology. We eat because the clock says noon, because portions are large, because others are eating, because the food is culturally defined as appetizing (raw fish is a delicacy in one culture and unthinkable in another). Learned and situational cues can trigger eating in the complete absence of physiological need.

Three theories of emotion — memorize the sequences

An emotion involves physiological arousal, expressive behavior, and conscious experience. The theories differ on the order:

Cannon's objection to James-Lange: many emotions share nearly identical arousal (fear and anger both race the heart), so arousal alone cannot be the emotion. Schachter and Singer added the missing ingredient — cognition. In their classic 1962 experiment, participants injected with adrenaline but given no explanation for their pounding hearts absorbed the mood of a planted confederate, reporting euphoria with a playful confederate and anger with an insulted one; participants who were told the injection caused the arousal did not, because they already had a label for it. Same arousal, different emotions — determined by the cognitive label drawn from context.

Does emotion require thought? Lazarus vs. Zajonc

Richard Lazarus argued emotion depends on cognitive appraisal — an interpretation (often instant, even unconscious) of whether a stimulus is threat or benefit. Robert Zajonc countered that some emotional reactions occur before and without conscious thought: you jump away from a coiled shape on the trail before you've identified it. The modern resolution recognizes two routes — a fast, subcortical path for instant reactions (Zajonc's cases) and a slower cortical path for appraised emotion (Lazarus's cases).

The face: feedback, universality, and display rules

The facial-feedback hypothesis holds that the facial muscles don't just express emotion — they feed back and influence it. In the classic demonstration, people induced to form a smile-like expression (holding a pen between their teeth) rated cartoons as funnier than people whose expression was blocked (holding the pen with their lips).

Nonverbal expression has a universal core: Paul Ekman found that facial expressions for a set of basic emotions — happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, disgust — are recognized across cultures, including isolated groups with no exposure to outside media, evidence that expression is biologically rooted rather than wholly learned. What culture controls is the display rules: learned norms for when and how intensely to show emotion (open wailing vs. stoic restraint at a funeral). The wiring is universal; the volume knob is cultural.
