Lesson 15: Biomes, the Biosphere, and Animal Behavior

This is the final lesson. It closes the Population Biology domain and then steps back to give you a whole-exam strategy. The CLEP exam is 90 minutes, ~115 all-multiple-choice items across three roughly equal domains, five answer choices each, with some unscored pretest questions mixed in.

Major terrestrial biomes

A biome is a large geographic region defined by its climate and the characteristic community adapted to it. Temperature and precipitation are the two master controls.

Two quick discriminators the exam rewards: - Precipitation primarily separates desert vs. grassland vs. forest. - Temperature/latitude primarily separates tropical vs. temperate vs. arctic versions.

Aquatic systems are classified less by climate and more by salinity, depth, and water flow.

The biosphere

The biosphere is the global sum of all ecosystems — the zone of Earth where life exists, spanning the lower atmosphere, the hydrosphere (water), and the upper lithosphere (soil/rock). It is a thin, interconnected shell where matter cycles among the atmosphere, water, land, and organisms. Changes in one part (e.g., atmospheric CO₂) propagate through the whole system.

Human impact on ecosystems

At CLEP breadth, know the major categories and one clear example of each:

Animal behavior

Behavior is what an animal does and how it does it; it has both genetic (innate) and experiential (learned) roots.

Innate (instinctive) behavior — genetically programmed, performed correctly the first time without learning, and largely uniform within a species. - Fixed action pattern (FAP) — a stereotyped sequence triggered by a specific stimulus (a sign stimulus or releaser); once started, it runs to completion (e.g., a greylag goose rolling an egg back to the nest). - Kinesis and taxis — undirected vs. directed movement responses to a stimulus.

Learned behavior — modified by experience. - Habituation — learning to ignore a repeated, harmless stimulus. - Imprinting — learning restricted to a brief critical (sensitive) period early in life, typically irreversible (e.g., goslings following the first moving object they see, usually the mother). - Associative learning — classical and operant conditioning (associating stimuli or linking behavior with reward/punishment). - Insight learning — solving a novel problem without trial and error.

Communication — signals passed between animals: chemical (pheromones), visual (displays), auditory (calls/song), and tactile (e.g., the honeybee waggle dance conveying food direction and distance).

Social behavior — includes dominance hierarchies, territoriality, courtship, and altruism (behavior that lowers an individual's own fitness while raising another's), often explained by kin selection — helping relatives who share your genes.
